If a noun ends in a vowel, make it plural by adding -s:

Mixed group

When there is a group of mixed gender, no matter what the ratio is of females to males and males to females, the group is always referred to as masculine.
For example:

Suppose I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters, I can say:

Tengo tres hermanos y dos hermanas

or

Tengo cinco hermanos

both sentences are correct, and in the last case cincos refer to a mixed group (3 brothers + 2 sisters).

Dialogue

¿Cuántos hermanos tienes?
How many siblings do you have?


¿Tengo dos hermanas y un hermano, ¿u tú?
I have two sisters and one brother, and you?


Yo tengo una hermana.
I have one sister


¿Y tienes hijos?
?Do you have any child?


Sí, tengo cuatro hijos: tres hijas y un hijo. ¿Y tú?
Yes, I have four children: three daughters and one son. And you?


Yo sólo tengo un hijo, ¡pero mi hermana tiene cinco hijos!
I have only one child, but my sister has five children!


¡Pues tus padre tienen muchos nietos!
Well your father has many grandchildren.
